The Green Spa Network, a five-year-old association of spas, wellness resorts, and spa leaders dedicated to embracing and promoting the connection among personal well-being, economic sustainability, and environmentalism, will now benefit from the expertise of the following new board members:
Darren Hickman is the president of Szep Elet, the exclusive distributor of ilike organic skin care and Puree Spa Organics. Hickman is also part owner and director of Engeenuity, a company developing all-natural antibacterial and preservation technologies for the water and food industries.
Kim Marshall is owner of The Marshall Plan, a dynamic public relations and branding firm established in 1995 in Los Angeles. It was the first in the U.S. to specialize in spas. Today, the firm’s clients include brand leaders in the areas of lifestyle, hospitality, and wellness industries.

New Reality Show Highlights the Nailcare Biz
I will admit it. I’m a bit of a reality TV junkie. I live for “Top Chef,” I secretly can’t get enough of “The Real Housewives,” I’m oddly enthralled by “Millionaire Matchmaker,” and I even partake in some “Jersey Shore” from time to time. So I was excited when I received some info about a reality show based in the beauty biz. Airing on the TV Guide Network next month, “Nail Files” takes viewers inside the upscale, unpredictable life of business owner Katie Cazorla. Born and raised in upstate New York, Katie is now living the glamorous life in Hollywood, where she’s has successfully launched The Painted Nail, a high-end nail salon. Her salon has become an overnight success, and she plans to franchise the business. The series follows Katie as she juggles running her salon while maintaining fabulous personal life. It already sounds like yet another reality show I won’t want to miss.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Proposes New Sunscreen Regulations to go into Effect Next Year
Choosing a sunscreen used to be easy. You’d simply look at the SPF and call it a day. Now we know that not all sunscreens are created equal. Products that protect against ultraviolet B (UVB), the rays primarily responsible for causing sunburn, will not necessarily protect you and your clients from skin cancer or premature aging. Fortunately, the FDA is shedding light on the situation to clear up any confusion related to the effectiveness of sunscreen products and ensure that they’re both labeled and manufactured properly. One of the proposed regulations is that sunscreen products with SPF values higher than 50 will simply be labeled SPF 50+. This is on account of the fact that the FDA doesn’t have adequate data proving that products with SPF values higher than 50 provide any additional protection than SPF 50 products. What do you look for in the sunscreens you choose for your clients? For more information on the proposed regulations, click here. Also, be sure to check out “Here Comes the Sun” in our latest issue.
