You would have to be living under a rock to not know by now all of the damage smoking cigarettes causes. In addition to the obvious health risks, smoking also wreaks havoc on the skin, causing wrinkles, a dull complexion, and dehydration. And now, a recent study published in the November issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reveals that smoking cigarettes is also linked to comedonal postadolescent acne (CPAA), a type of acne most common in adult females. The study determined that nearly 73 percent of the adult women with CPAA who participated were smokers. Writes the authors, “According to our results, CPAA appears as the most frequent clinical form of postadolescent acne and seems to be strictly correlated with cigarette smoking.”
Several years ago, I visited The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Miami, and was impressed by its treatments, its therapists, its location, and its look. Now, following a magnificent makeover, the spa has even more to offer discerning guests. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the spa has completed a significant refurbishment with the redesign of its public and private spaces. The new design blends gold, blue, and brown hues within a peaceful spa environment. “Through design, we’ve created an experiential journey that is designed to awaken the senses,” says spa director Osa Mallo. “The new design complements the 11 private treatment rooms and six VIP Spa Suites and provides a spectacular setting for spa guests to enjoy a range of delightful treatments.”
Designed by Robert D. Henry Architects, the spa’s public areas are now bright and lively and include a spa welcome reception and new retail boutique. A gold beaded circular backdrop, resembling a golden blanket, welcomes and envelops guests at reception. In the retail boutique, products are showcased in retail displays set into rich zebrawood millwork that are reminiscent of the varying trunks of trees. Soft sandalwood scents fill the air providing a journey for both the eyes and the mind.
To celebrate this update, guests can partake in the 10th Anniversary Spa package ($640, 5 hours), which includes a Contour & Firm body treatment, a Time Reversal facial, an Anti-Aging Manicure, a Reviving Pedicure, and a Bento Box lunch served poolside.
Congrats to The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Miami! I can’t wait to see the update in person.
Spa-goers can pamper themselves this season with 20 percent off of holiday treatments at the Arizona Biltmore. Guests can take a break from the stresses of the season with the spa’s special menu of treatments, including the Vanilla or Cinnamon Spice Stone Massage ($195, 80 minutes) ($150, 50 minutes; $210 for 80 minutes), the Cinnamon Spice and Everything Nice Body Scrub and Massage, the Harvest Facial ($135, 50 minutes), and Candy Cane Stone Manicure or Pedicure ($85, 50 minutes). It’s the perfect way to get into the spirit of the season—and save a few bucks as well.
We here at American Spa are big fans of luxury resorts in exotic locales. So we were delighted to learn that The Four Seasons Resort Nevis, which has been closed for the past two years due damage from Hurricane Omar, is slated to re-open December 15th. The 196-room resort will feature a number of first-class amenities, but we are especially excited about the updated gardens at Spa at Four Seasons, where vacationers can relax, rejuvenate, and rejoice that this magnificent property has been restored.
‘Tis the season for pop-up stores. Capitalizing on that idea, Oasis Day Spa (New York City and Westchester) is boosting business by taking its services outside of the spa. It provides estheticians, massage therapists, nail technicians, and hair and makeup artists for private parties, in-store promotions, sales meetings, and more across the country. One of its off-site clients even refers to it as “Re-Fresh Direct.” With the holidays upon us, it’s the perfect opportunity to take your spa to those who are too busy to make it there on their own.

Last week, the American Spa crew took a road trip to D.C. for the annual ISPA Conference. There, we caught up with old friends; made some new ones; discovered interesting new products; attended various industry parties, including bashes by Clarisonic, Éminence Organic Skin Care, and Universal Companies; and bonded with a group run through the streets of Old Town Alexandria. Best of all was the opportunity to spend time with our fellow American Spa teammates who are scattered throughout the country and beyond. As we parted ways, it was with a renewed sense of purpose to continue giving our best to bring you a must-read spa publication that reflects the people and places that make this industry truly special.
