The Healing Power of Arnica

George, the adorable culprit of my latest injuries, which were cured by arnica oil.

It’s no secret that I am somewhat of a klutz, but two weeks ago I took one of my worst spills. I was sitting on my sister’s deck reading a magazine and lazily holding the retractable leash of her boxer, George, when all of a sudden a cat strolled by, sending George into a tizzy and causing me to be pulled a few hundred yards behind him. The cat escaped unscathed, but unfortunately I wasn’t as lucky. After a trip to the emergency room, I was the proud owner of three torn ligaments in my right arm, a severely sprained wrist, and a lot of pain. Over the next couple of days, the swelling and bruising became so severe that I was actually scaring small children on the subway, and my family started referring to me (jokingly, but not really) as “Club Arm.” Realizing that ice just wasn’t cutting it, I remembered an article I had written last June about arnica, which is well known for its anti-inflammatory and muscle relieving properties. So I scoured my office beauty closet and found Dr. Hauschka’s Birch Arnica Body Oil, which I immediately began slathering on my arm. After applying it consistently, three days later not only had the bruising almost disappeared but the swelling was reduced dramatically. I was so impressed by the results that I actually ventured to wear short sleeves today for the first time since the incident! Going forward (and knowing my history), I plan to keep this miracle oil on hand at all times. To read more about the healing benefits of arnica, check out my article here.

Scenes from Global Spa Summit

While there have already been some truly exciting pre-event activities here in Istanbul, the Global Spa Summit officially kicked off Monday night. But the day included a number of exciting Pre-Summit Bridge Building Sessions. I sat in on a session called Leveraging Technology for Greater Market Share, led by Lopo Champalimaud, co-founder of Wahanda. It was an interesting hour filled with tips and trends from several industry movers and shakers. My favorite cool idea to help build your spa’s world-of-mouth reputation? Invest in a PC and set it up near your reception desk. As guests depart, invite them to put a post about their experience on consumer review sites like or Potential clients are always trolling the web for spa reviews and recommendations, and this is a great way to get your spa to the top.

Post-session, I headed to the Welcome Cocktail Reception and Dinner at the Ciragan Palace Kempinski, the event’s host hotel. As you can tell by the photos, a wonderful time was had by all. Check back often. I’ll be blogging more about the amazing experience I’m having at this year’s event.

CND Debuts Shellac

I love wearing dark polish on my fingernails. Unfortunately, due to the fact that I’m hammering away on a keyboard every day, a fresh manicure usually has about a two-day lifespan before it starts chipping and looking sloppy. Last week, however, I discovered the perfect, long-lasting solution, thanks to CND’s newest offering—Shellac. I met with company founder, Jan Arnold, who filled me in on this hybrid nail color that was created after five years of development. Shellac lasts, chip-free, for 14 days. It paints on like polish—with a base coast, color, and top coat—and is cured with a UV light, which results in zero drying time. And I can attest to this fact. As soon as my manicurist, Dana D’Andraia from Cactus Salon in East Setauket, NY, applied my Shellac set and I removed my hands from CND’s new UV Lamp, the color had set, and my nails were ready for action sporting Fedora, a fabulous chocolate brown shade. I even dug through my bag for keys, business cards, and my phone, and my manicure remained shiny and chip-free. “Our chemists invented a modern solution to the normal polish inconveniences that frustrate women,” Arnold explained. “Shellac is fret-free and convenient. Women can finally get their time back.” So far, it’s working wonders for me. I’m five days in, and my manicure looks as fresh as it did on day one. And news of Shellac is spreading quickly, with hundreds of spas and salons signing up daily to offer this professional nailcare solution to their clients. Visit for a list, and try it out for yourself. I’m betting you’ll also become a fan.

Global Spa Summit Kicks Off in Istanbul

Today, I arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, for my first ever Global Spa Summit. The first event? A spectacular cocktail reception at Swissotel and a tour of its lovely Amrita Spa. In spite of a rather wicked case of jet-lag, it has been such a fun evening, filled with connecting with friends like American Spa columnist Peter Anderson, Universal Companies’s Alfredo Carvajal and his lovely wife, Living Earth Crafts’s Jim Chenevey, SpaEquip’s Polly Johnson, and many more. Enjoy a few preview pics here. And stay tuned, I’ll be blogging throughout the event and posting photos, as will my SpaTrade colleague, Lisa Starr (check us out enjoying the fabulous city views). Welcome to Turkey!

Ritz-Carlton Buckhead Marries Spa & Hotel

While The Ritz-Carlton has gained acclaim for its Club Level, a high-end option that includes luxe accommodations and amenities like daily complimentary food and beverage presentations, The Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead has taken this option to spa-inspired heights with its Spa Level. Last weekend, while attending my cousin’s wedding with my mom, I got a chance to see it for myself. This option is ideal for spa-lovers. Each of the rooms, which are located on the spa floor and include in-room dining menus featuring options like salads, smoothies, and house-made sorbets. Additionally, the rooms include special amenities as:

  • Eco-friendly, microfiber bed linens with extra-fine weave for maximum softness
  • Oversized 100-percent Turkish cotton bath towels
  • Spa bathrobes and Okabashi spa slippers

These rooms are also located in close proximity to the lovely three-treatment-room spa, where my mom and I enjoyed spa services, including the Muscle Ease Hot Stone Massage  ($149, 60 minutes) for her and the Lavender Dreams ($209, 90 minutes) for me, which includes a body scrub, a lotion application, a warm wrap, and a scalp and foot massage surrounded by fragrant, calming lavender.

Indeed, it was the perfect pre-wedding relaxation experience (Here, we are pictured on our way to the wedding). Stay tuned for more about the hotel’s Spa Level and the spa in an upcoming edition of American Spa.

Spa-Goers Can Celebrate Spring with A Free Lunch Courtesy of Willow Stream Spas

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of staying at the Fairmont Turnberry Isle in Miami, which I thoroughly enjoyed. In addition to lounging poolside, shopping at the nearby Aventura Mall (the hotel provides free shuttle service to and from the mall, making it nearly impossible not to shop), and the gorgeous accommodations, I was thrilled to visit the Willow Stream Spa. In between the amazing treatments I received, I relaxed at the spa café on the second floor, where I dined on the spa’s signature Bento Box Lunch. This divine meal included tropical fruits and other local tastes, and I remember thinking it was one of the best spas meals I have eaten.

Now, thanks to a special spring promotion, spa-goers at any Willow Stream Spa can enjoy a Bento Box Lunch on the house when they book a 90-minute spa treatment. During the months of May and June, clients simply have to ask about the spa’s special spring free offers and they will not only be pampered like a princess but they will also be eating like a king.
