Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa (Corona, CA) will host the annual Angel Faces retreat, which takes place June 20–26 at the Glen Ivy Retreat Center. Angel Faces is a nonprofit organization that hosts a retreat each year designed to inspire adolescent girls with severe facial disfigurations from burns, cancer, accidents, abuse, and birth anomalies. During the weeklong retreat, these young girls will enjoy massages and facials with products donated from Primavera, hairstyling from stylist Billy Yamaguchi, makeup sessions provided by La Bella Donna cosmetics, dance lessons, self-defense classes, and a formal dinner prepared by Glen Ivy executive chef Bill Wavrin.
It’s not always easy to stay motivated year after year. However, just because something isn’t easy doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing. Honoring six beauty icons who have changed the industry in a positive way, Harms Software is featuring clients Robert Cromeans, John Paul DeJoria, Carmen DePasquale, Ted Gibson, Edward Tricomi, and Joel Warren in an upcoming ad campaign for Millennium SpaSalon software. The first ad, displaying all the icons together, is slated to debut next week. Intended to inspire beauty professionals everywhere to be their best, the campaign encourages you to dream big. “Do you ever feel burnt out or like you’re just going through the motions?” asks president John Harms. “It’s very easy to become complacent and mediocre, so we say, don’t just be…be legendary, be beautiful, be honorable, be inspirational, and be unstoppable!” Words we can all live by. As part of the campaign, each honoree will be featured individually and speak to a “be” word that describes and inspires them. For more on each icon and other stories from stylists across the country, check out www.harms-software.com/be in May. And feel free to submit your own story to email@example.com. Everyone could use a bit of motivation from time to time.

Although there is no shortage of spas in Manhattan, I always enjoy discovering new ones that add to the city’s variety. Recently, I had the opportunity to experience a treatment at Spa Merge, part of West 57th Street by Hilton Club, New York City’s first ground-up shared ownership property. Fortunately, for me and other locals, this urban oasis isn’t reserved strictly for owners. Instead, the ground-level spa invites those passing by on 57th St. to escape the city’s hustle and bustle and enjoy the spa’s soothing environment. It was certainly a welcome escape for me. Heading back to the office after experiencing the spa’s exclusive Fusion Massage ($120, 60 minutes; $180, 90 minutes) was a bit more challenging. Look for more on Spa Merge in an upcoming issue.

I’m currently at the IECSC show in Las Vegas. Though I’ve been on the show floor for two days, this visit hasn’t been all about walking the aisles and checking out the new spa offerings on display at the show. When I arrived on Friday, I got a chance to experience the heavenly new Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas. The 27,000 square foot, two-floor spa is, in a word, spectacular. It was designed to harken guests back to 1930s Shanghai, and I was immediately intrigued by the lovely artwork and accents that give the spa a decidedly Asian flair. I also loved the amenities offered in the women’s locker area. I arrived early for my appointment and was able to enjoy the steam room, experience shower, laconium, vitality booth, ice fountain, and rhassoul. Then, I stretched out in a comfy lounge chair and took in views of Las Vegas Boulevard while I waited for my therapist. Next, I enjoyed the signature Mahjong Balance treatment, which provided the perfect refreshing boost to help me battle my jet-lag and kick-start my Vegas visit. Inspired by the traditional Chinese game Mahjong, this signature journey begins with a uplifting welcoming foot ritual using ginger, jasmine, and green tea and is followed by skin smoothing body exfoliation and a deep therapeutic massage using warm jade stones. The experience concludes with the application of cool jade of the Mahjong tile to soothe and calm the body resulting in a rejuvenated sense of equilibrium. Post-treatment, I joined spa director Jennifer Lynn and Alyssa Bushey, director of communications, for a cocktail at the Mandarin Bar, a sky-high, glass-enclosed bar on the hotel’s 23rd floor where we toasted the opening of this wonderful new retreat. It’s day three of the International Esthetics, Cosmetics & Spa show. Check out some of these photos from the show, and stay tuned—we’re learning about new products, offerings, companies, and more and will be sharing them here.
We’re wrapping up Day 2 of IECSC Las Vegas and we couldn’t be happier. The aisles are packed, attendees are enthusiastic, and we’re getting great feedback about this year’s show. Here’s a glimpse of what’s happening on the floor:
Summer is right around the corner! With sunnier days comes the temptation to soak in the rays. We all know that we need to be watchful of our skincare regimen during this time to protect from harmful UV rays. The folks at Ilike Organic Skin Care remind us that you have to apply SPF not only at the beach, but also during any prolonged outdoor activity.
Containing vitamins, lycopenes, bioflavanoids, and karotenoids, Ilike’s Tomato Suntan Lotion and Tomato Suntan Gel selectively filter the harmful UVC and the burning short wavelength UVB rays, while allowing beneficial UVA and long UVB rays through, which induce the formation of Vitamin D. These products allow skin to get a healthy glow, while protecting from a damaging sunburn.

People are realizing that maintaining healthy skin is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. To help you get ahead of the competition and remain successful, Edge Systems has developed the Aesthetic Builder Seminar Series. Doctors, medical facilities, and spas throughout the country have adopted the Edge Systems method and are simply raving. Skin health should be affordable, and Edge can show you how.
On Saturday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., in room N105 at the Las Vegas Convention Center during IECSC Las Vegas, industry expert Greg Stickley will present how to “Revitalize Your Aesthetic Business With Proven, Hands-on Marketing Tactics.” Learn how to gain new clients, how to significantly increase revenues, and how to incorporate emerging trends and technologies to boost your business.
Then when you hit the show floor, make sure to find your way over to the Edge Systems booth (#1847). The booth will be hosting daily discussions addressing fundamental marketing strategies to help improve your aesthetic business. Topics include increasing patient retention, antioxidants and skin health, and the importance of detoxification for the skin. “The marketing strategies presented are simple but profoundly wise,” says Martin Zaiac, M.D.
The booth will also feature HydraFacial demonstrations, the exclusive HydraFacial Daily solutions including the highly requested Antiox Daily, and a chance to win a new iPod touch!
