We’ve come across a fun investment opportunity for spa-goers who want to boost their health and wellness portfolio. Exhale Mind Body Spa has created a spa savings plan even the most non-money-minded can get behind. This year, from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, Exhale fans can get pampering gifts for friends and family while putting away money to pamper themselves and get back into shape for 2010. For every $100 gift card purchased for a friend, Exhale will match the purchase with a $50 credit for spa/wellness/fitness to be used in 2010. (The promotion code for this package is exgc50.) This credit is valid from Jan. 1 to Oct. 31, 2010. It’s like a 401(k) plan for wellness and renewal!
Thanks to The Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach, there is a hangover I wouldn’t mind having. Forget the weak stomach, headache, and bloodshot eyes—the resort’s Holiday Hangover (starting at $249) will leave visitors revived and refreshed. Including overnight accommodations, the package, offered January 1st and 2nd, invites guests to breakfast for two—Bloody Mary included, of course—and some pampering at Eau Spa. Guests will partake in the Scrub and Polish experience at the spa, where they will consult with a mixologist to create a custom blend of oils, herbs, and salts to use in a detoxifying do-it-yourself treatment. They will also have all-day access to the spa facilities, which include the Bath Lounge, Eau Zone, and Self-Centered Garden. After this day of recovery at the Ritz, guests will wish their Holiday Hangover would never go away.
In Cooking Well: Beautiful Skin (Hatherleigh Press, 2009), beauty and skincare expert Elizabeth TenHouten provides easy-to-follow recipes to achieve beautiful and radiant skin. Utilizing the benefits of antioxidants, which help skin cells fight off free radicals found in the environment like UV rays and airborne pollutants, this book helps make beauty and health synonymous with each other. The book contains more than 120 antioxidant-rich recipes and more than 75 “Beauty Bytes,” which are recipes for natural beauty remedies and topical treatments made from 100 percent natural ingredients found in most kitchens.
Planning to drink apple cider during Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow or eat a salad with apple cider vinegar on it? According to this book, it can do more than just taste good. To experience the skincare benefits of this ingredient, fill up a spray bottle with a 1:1 ratio of apple cider vinegar to purified water and spritz on the face and body to help tighten and tone the skin.
I spend a lot of time on the road, both at spas and at trade shows, and the most common thing I hear from my readers is, “American Spa is my favorite magazine. I read it from cover-to-cover and even tear out pages to pass along to my staff.” It is incredibly fulfilling to know that the efforts of my team are so appreciated by our industry. And it turns out, the spa world isn’t the only one impressed by our magazine. The publishing world is equally enthused. For the fourth year in a row, American Spa has been tapped for editorial excellence from FOLIO:, a leading publishing industry magazine. A panel of 60 expert judges sifted through more than 2,000 entries this year and honored American Spa with two gold Eddie trophies—one for Best Overall Issue for the October 2008 edition and one for Best Single Article for “There’s The Rub” by Peggy Wynne Borgman, which was published in June 2008.
I’m so excited to share this news, and I would like to take the opportunity to introduce you to my team. Click here to meet the staff of American Spa magazine and access all of our email accounts. We’d love to hear your feedback about the award and the magazine itself. What do you think about American Spa, and what can we do to improve and serve you better? I’d like to continue receiving these annual FOLIO: honors, and the only way we can do that is by maintaining our position as the industry’s most valuable publication. Please stay in touch to help us stay on top—feel free to contact me any time at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Because it is never to soon to learn healthy hygiene habits, the American Academy of Dermatology recently launched www.kidsskinhealth.org. The website, which was created by dermatologists, teaches children ages 8 to 12 the importance of proper skincare while warning of the negative consequences that might occur, such as pimples, greasy hair, and sunburns, if they don’t follow a healthy regimen. The site also features “It’s a Skin Cell’s Life,” an interactive game starring Sammy the Skin Cell, that is both informative and fun.
Getting into the spirit of the season, guests at Skin Haven Spa Studio (Los Angeles) can reap the benefits of the Organic Pumpkin Cream Body Wrap ($160, 75 minutes). The nourishing treatment begins with a full-body exfoliation using either a dry brush or mitts. Next, Éminence Organic Skin Care’s Pumpkin Cream Body Wrap is applied to the body before clients are wrapped and treated to a scalp massage and reflexology. Once the wrap is removed and the product showered off, clients are given a relaxing massage with Herbal Spice Body Lotion or Vanilla Bean Body Lotion, depending on their preference. There’s no need to worry about calories with this pumpkin treat. For product info, check out the Resources tab above.

Winter is quickly approaching, and for me, that means heavy coats, snow boots, and pale skin. I’m always looking for ways to brighten up my skin in the winter, so I was very excited to learn about some new at-home products by St. Tropez at a press event yesterday. The company is launching a range of Wash Off products in March that deliver an all-day radiant glow, but can be easily removed with soap and water. The collection consists of Wash Off Face, Wash Off Body, Wash Off Mousse, and Wash Off Shimmer Stick.
Also available starting in March are three must-have self-tanning essentials designed to help remove any unwanted tan. Tan Detox features a blend of natural lavender and hazelnut oils to gently and effectively remove unwanted self tan residue while preparing skin for a new application; Tan Remover contains gentle exfoliating beads and is especially effective in removing self tanner from palms of hands and between fingers and toes; and Tan Cleansing Wipes contain green tea and chamomile extracts to help remove any unwanted self tanner from delicate areas like underarms, knees, and elbows. With these new at-home sunless tanning products, the future of pale skin sure looks bright!
“We are preparing for the holiday season by developing some new services that are not only going to offer our guests a pleasant experience but also greater value. We are in the process of creating some winter packages that will appeal to any budget. One service that we just added is the Body Polish Massage, which utilizes a micro-algae scrub infused with Indonesian ginger to calm the skin, followed by a massage using warmed organic ginger oil. It’s sure to warm up our guests. We’re also going to offer a 10 percent discount on any service through the fall and winter. This discount will graduate 5 percent with each additional service that our guest books up to 20 percent.”—Krista Sherman, spa director, InnSpa at the WaterColor Inn & Resort (Santa Rosa Beach, FL)
