Mary Ann Graffeo, a past director and officer of Cosmetologists Chicago and member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Cosmetology Association, passed away July 2.
Graffeo was known for her well-rounded expertise in the beauty industry, serving as a cosmetologist, esthetician, makeup artist, salon owner, spa owner, and paramedical makeup expert at various points in her career. She also served as president of the Aestheticians International Association (AIA) and the Northwest Hairdressers Association and formed the Federation of American Esthetics.
“Mary Ann Graffeo was a Chicago original,” says Paul Dykstra, CEO of Cosmetologists Chicago and America’s Beauty Show. “One of my favorite stories was to hear from her how her father purchased a salon for her when she was only 18, fresh out of beauty school. ‘He gave me the keys,’ she remarked, ‘and from that minute I was on my own!’
“And it was ‘on her own that Mary Ann became a legend in Chicago beauty history, a support to our organizations, and a lifelong friend to all,” adds Dykstra. “She will be greatly missed. Mary Ann Graffeo truly exemplified Chicago skincare at its finest.”
